At the Mountain of Madness Monday, Jul 11 2011

I always appreciate a good fan-work, so I was delighted when I found an Italian fan-made animated rendition of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. While the animation is rather crude (in quality, not in content), it will have to do, as the big-budget Hollywood adaptation has been cancelled. The reason usually given is that director Guillermo del Toro insisted on an R-rating when the studio wanted a PG-13 movie, though del Toro has also stated that the $150-million budget was likely to blame.

Guillermo del Toro Discusses Lovecraft Movie Sunday, Feb 6 2011

In a recent interview with The New Yorker, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro described several of his current projects, including a new version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and what he described as his dream project, a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness.” The last third of the article is mostly devoted to discussions of this project, especially the initial design process of the Shoggoths, the monstrous denizens of the titular mountains (the picture below is one artist’s interpretation of a Shoggoth, drawn by Pahko and used under Creative Commons). I’m always in favor of Lovecraft’s work getting more attention, and while I’m not much of a moviegoer, I’d definitely make the trip to see this. AB
